Great trip to London that accomplished a number of objectives:
For intellectual enrichment, my travelling companions and I attended four memorable plays- “Road”- a revival about Thatcher’s England playing at the Royal Court; “The Ferryman”- about the 1980’s “troubles” in N. Ireland playing at the Gielgud; “The Girl from the North Country” utilizing Bob Dylan music to tell the depression-era story set in Minnesota, at the Old Vic; and “Follies” a revival of the famous Sondheim musical about the disillusionment creeping in when relationships and youth fade, which had just opened to rave reviews at the National.
For business development, I met with Nick Churton, director of Mayfair- our London marketing arm, at Chiltern Firehouse to strategize how best to market our upper end properties internationally at this time of great change in the word order. Nick’s a great raconteur and he travels throughout Europe and the US constantly to counsel with leading brokers. The changes have definitely brought a discernable cooling to the tippy top of the markets in London, Paris and New York.
As the Director of the Capital Campaign for the Dallas Institute of Humanities and Culture, along with board member Dr. Nancy Cain Marcus, I visited acclaimed architect Thomas Heatherwick in his London Studio to discuss a possible Heatherwick commission to re-think the Nancy Cain Marcus Center on our Dallas campus. Heatherwick showed us photos of the just completed Zeitz MOCCA, the first art museum ever to built in Africa (Cape Town), created out of old silos, as well as a mammoth mixed use project that he’s working on in Singapore. He shared with us he feels very connected to Dallas ever since Nasher Director Jeremy Strick coordinated the retrospective of his work entitled “Provocations” which opened at the Nasher Sculpture Center in 2014.
